Newborn Clowance

Clowance was the third child and second daughter of Ross and Demelza Poldark. She was born at Nampara in 1794. Her elder sister, Julia Poldark, died before Clowance was born, and she had an elder brother, Jeremy Poldark.[1]

Her mother had gone into labour suddenly and gave birth in no time, to the surprise of Ross, who came home to find Demelza in bed. Demelza had hidden Clowance under a sheet, as Ross potted around without knowing. When Ross asked Demelza whether she needed anything, Demelza told him that he could say hello to his daughter. Ross was delighted, and held and kissed Clowance. They later had a christening for her; attended by her uncles Sam and Drake, and Geoffrey Charles.[2]

She and her illegitimate half-brother, Valentine Warleggan were born in the same year, but she was born later than he was.[1]

Early life[]

From 1794 to 1799, Clowance was usually found accompanying her parents and Jeremy, and they would walk down to the beach. Her father, Ross would go to London often and she had once asked how London was.

In 1800, her parents took her and Jeremy for a walk to the beach and returned home to find Geoffrey Charles at Nampara. She and Jeremy were delighted and greeted him. Days later, Demelza woke her and Jeremy up when someone set fire to the house, and guided them to safety. She later took Clowance and Jeremy to London where Ross was staying.[3]

Clowance and Jeremy looked out of their carriage near their lodging in London and were impressed by the soldiers walking by. She would be introduced to Ned and Kitty Despard during their stay. She later laughed at Ned who had taken her toy.[4]

She and the family later headed back to Cornwall. She joined Demelza, Jeremy, Prudie and Kitty on a walk. They saw George Warleggan's sign warning trespassers away from Trenwith, and she was very curious about why they couldn't go there. She and Jeremy later went to Wheal Grace and asked Demelza why Tommy couldn't read.[5]

Clowance was introduced to Valentine at a celebration for Ross and Ned's rescue at Wheal Plenty and was told he was a new friend.[5]
