Cusgarne was a village in Cornwall, where the Chynoweth family lived. It was about six miles from Truro.
In 1783, the Chynoweth family were impoverished and their house was nearly falling down.[1] In 1793, George Warleggan proposed to Elizabeth Chynoweth at her family house in Cusgarne.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- Winston Graham was known for using names and locations he knew in real life for the novels. Cusgarne is a village in Cornwall that Graham went to during the Second World War.
- The Chynoweth family house was based on Cusgarne House. Graham spoke to a woman who lived there when he was doing research into Cornish mining. He was writing the first novel at the time. The house belonged to James Watt during the time period that the first Poldark novels were set. He and his business partner, Matthew Boulton revolutionised the mining industry.[3][4]
