The Revolutionary War, also known as the War of Independence, began when thirteen of the North American states declared independence from Great Britain's rule. It lasted from 1775 to 1783.

In 1780, Ross Poldark joined the British Army to escape execution for brawling. Even though he thought their part in it was wrong, he fought for them in the Revolutionary War. He was thought to be a lost cause by his Captain and Lieutenant, and told his infantry they were fighting against liberty in favour of tyranny.

In 1781, the infantry was playing cards when they were attacked. Ross was the sole survivor, and was knocked out when he was slashed in the face. He was found by Edward Despard and received medical care from Dwight Enys. He was left with a scar on his cheek. In 1783, he returned home to Cornwall, where he faced people wondering what went wrong because it had ended in victory for the Americans.[1]
